Since olive trees are ancient and extremely important for human survival, they gradually acquired extensive symbolism and mythology. They are always associated with the positive – bringing people health, beauty and prosperity.
Already the Greek mythology contains many such references; for example, Athena supposedly became a goddess because she bestowed the olive tree on the Greeks. Ancient Greeks used olive oil in their temples, anointing victorious athletes and presenting it as a precious good. Besides laurel, olive wreaths were also used. The Bible contains many references to oil, for it is a symbol of the covenant between man and God: after the Flood a dove supposedly brought an olive branch to Noah’s Ark. In today’s Christian practices, olive branches are used during the celebration of the Palm Sunday.

The olive tree is a symbol of peace and prosperity, and today it is also a trademark of the Mediterranean. The Padna coat of arms also contains an olive branch.
