The Kresnik Award, Prešeren Award, Academy Award... For Čefurji raus! | 2.07.09

Two days before Čefurji raus! was staged in Istranova, Goran Vojnović, the author of the book which the theatre play is based on, received the Kresnik Award for Best Novel. The award ceremony was attended by none other than Marko Đorđić, the protagonist of the novel and the performance. During the discussion in Istranova Goran joked that he was also expecting the Academy Award. The film is in fact in the works, and after seeing the performance and reading the book I agree that perhaps he should in fact get it!

The performance attracted almost two hundred people to Padna. Our terrace was completely crammed and then the monodrama started. Istranova has never been so quiet and concentrated before: in order to hear each word, every profanity and understand the slang, we had to listen carefully.

Čefurji raus! is a humorous performance, which occasionally even provoked a spontaneous applause, but it also has bitter moments which make us uncomfortable, wishing that the whole issue of immigrants would only be funny.

The evening was wrapped up by Bosnian stew cooked by our chef Marko, and then we left the stage to the crickets. But we will soon proceed with our programme!
